NGC 7479 (UGC 12343) - Barred Spiral Galaxy - type (Seyfert 2), SBbc in Pegasus.

Discovered by William Herschel in 1784.

NGC 7479 (UGC 12343) is a classic barred spiral galaxy about 105 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. This is one of the few northern barred spirals in which the structure is clearly visible. The spiral galaxy NGC 7479 has a strange morphology, marked by the unusually strong bar and the two bright asymmetric arms. It has a small, bright active galactic nucleus (Seyfert type 2) being fed by gas flowing in along the bar structure. A bright bar is oriented N-S with a bright core and nearly stellar nucleus. The two spiral arms come from ends of the bar. The arms appear to form an off-center pseudo ring. Deep exposures of the disk reveal a small but well defined tail with regions of star formation to the North. These structures are recognized signatures of interaction but, in the absence of companions, the most plausible explanation seems to be the suggested canibalization of a small galaxy that would by now near the nucleus.

Also, note the distant background galaxies in the picture.

North is up. The Horizontal FOV is about 28' (crop from original FOV). The image almost centered at:
